MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – As part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office’s new SAFE Campaign, Deputies will be conducting extra patrols this summer looking for seatbelt violations.

“We see the benefits of seatbelt usage firsthand and will do whatever it takes to lower the critical injury and fatality rate here in Montgomery County,” said Sheriff John Fuson. “It is especially heartbreaking for us when we see a life lost when it could have been prevented by something as simple as wearing your seatbelt.”

The Seatbelts Are for Everyone campaign is looking to increase seat belt and child passenger safety restraint usage in Tennessee, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is one of 169 law enforcement agencies that have agreed to participate.

“Seatbelts save lives,” said Kendell Poole, Director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office in a press release. “Nationally, seatbelt usage rates have increased steadily over time. However, in 2013, more than half of Tennessee traffic fatalities were unbelted. This SAFE Campaign will help to educate all drivers across the state about the importance of wearing seat belts.”
