CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – During the Student Traffic Awareness Training (STAT) Class offered by the Clarksville Police Department (CPD) Saturday, teens learned about the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired or distracted.
The students first saw a mangled truck, which was involved in a drunk driving accident that left a young girl, Emily Mills, paralyzed. Emily’s mother Stephanie Rutherford spoke to the class about the crash that caused Emily’s injuries and the affects drunk driving has on the victims.
After the discussion, students attempted to drive golf carts through an obstacle course while wearing simulation “drunk goggles” or texting.
Two more STAT classes will be offered this year on August 30 and October 25. Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grace Nazarene Church, 3135 Trenton Rd. The class is free and open to students age 15 through 19.
Applications are available at www.clarksvillepd.org or at police headquarters, 135 Commerce St.
