CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Rossview’s baseball team hosted top-ranked Houston High School in a sectional match for the right to travel to the state tournament. Houston’s lockdown defense prevailed 7-1, ending Rossview’s season.
Cannon Rice started on the mound for the Hawks. The first inning was scoreless, as a strong wind made several balls easy to catch for both teams’ outfielders. Houston found success with hitting the ball on the ground. They eventually loaded the bases in the top of the second. The Mustangs’ first run came when Rice’s pitch made it past the catcher; they added two more runs with a single to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Another wild pitch in the top of the third allowed Houston to score once again. Rossview threatened in the bottom of the third with a bases loaded situation. Dylan Kazee came to the plate with only one out. Houston’s defense continued to have their pitcher’s back, and they turned a double play off Kazee’s ground ball to escape the inning.
Houston High tacked on three more insurance runs. Rossview’s lone run came in the bottom of the 6th when district player of the year Brady Cooper’s deep double brought Andrew Stewart all the way from first to home.
The Hawks finished with a record of 28-14. For the first time in program history, the boys won championships in the regular season, district tournament and region tournament. The team graduates 12 seniors this season.
