CLARKSVILLE, TN – Scouts BSA “The First Ladies” Troop 21 has served the youth of Montgomery County since Feb. 1, 2019. Now, as of March 1, the American Legion CSM Gary W. Crisp Post 289 has become the troop’s charter organization.
Not only do these two organizations share common goals, but they also share leadership. Dawn Schmidt, former president of Auxiliary Unit 289, was instrumental in working with the troop leadership for its first charter.
Douglas Kirby is the current post Scouting chairman and Chrisie Moore also is a member of the Scouting leadership. Chrisie is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 289 and stepped down as the first Scoutmaster to assume the role of charter organizational representative for the all-girls troop. In addition, Douglas Kirby has been a longtime American Legion member. Doug currently over sees the post’s five Scouting units.
Currently, Post 289 has the most chartered Scout units in the American Legion Department of Tennessee, according to Ernest Schmidt, the American Legion Department of Tennessee state Scouting chairman.
Some of the projects the American Legion Post 289 and Scouts have collaborated on include the annual 4 Chaplains Memorial Service, poppy sales at the Fort Campbell Post Exchange and an Eagle project to install a boat ramp in Billy Dunlop Park.
