CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Academy girls basketball has won the Division II-A District 4 championship.
The Lady Cougars defeated Goodpasture 36-27 at Proctor Court on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021.
CA was able to avenge their loss to Goodpasture which occurred eight days prior to capture the postseason crown.
“I thought that loss last week did more for us than anything,” Clark said. “It refocused the group and leading up to this game, we didn’t overlook DCA. We took the necessary steps all week and I was just proud of them today and yesterday in preparation for Goodpasture. Obviously, that’s what you expect when you have as many seniors as we do playing in a district championship for the third straight year.”
Points were certainly at a premium throughout, as both teams struggled in terms of half-court offense.
“It’s the tournament,” Clark said. “That’s what you’re going to get. They’ve seen you, they’ve scouted you and know all the things that you’re going to do. It just means that you have to go and make a play and we did. I thought the biggest play was when they came out in their 1-3-1. We moved the ball and found Diamond (Bryant) on the backside for a three. At that point in my mind, I think that really sealed the deal.”
Another crucial play for Clarksville Academy happened when sophomore Savannah Prather knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing to give her team an 8-5 lead to end the opening quarter.
“That was a huge shot,” Clark said. “In these tournament games, you have to have someone that’s going to step up and do that. Savannah is more than capable of doing that and I’m proud of her not just for that shot, but she got some big rebounds and passed the ball well too. She was definitely big for us tonight.”
In the second quarter, Atyia Moss was able to get to the basket and record some easy scores in the process to help CA build a sizable lead.
“She’s multi-skilled,” Clark said. “She uses both hands well, she can make threes and she can pass the ball. She also has a good court awareness and IQ, so she is just one of those kids where you don’t necessarily put a position on her, she’s just a really good basketball player.”
Diamond Bryant led all scorers with 10 points while Moss finished with nine points for Clarksville Academy.
Goodpasture’s La’Zaviona Hawkins had a team-high nine points followed by Hadleigh Wharton with eight points.
With the region tournament on the horizon, Clark believes his team is hitting their stride at the right time.
“I still go back to last Friday’s game,” Clark said. “I think it just kind of helps refocus you. I just like what I’ve seen this week as far as my first go-round with them and how they move and go about preparing for games. I was impressed and feel confident that they are going to be up for the task.”
Clarksville Academy hosts CPA Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the Division II-A Middle Region Tournament.
After the game, the Division II-A District 4 regular-season and postseason honorees were announced.
