CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky., (WKRN) – Two drivers died after their vehicles collided and caught fire in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 at the Tennessee/Kentucky state line on Friday, June 26.
According to Kentucky State Police, the crash happened around 8 a.m., when a box truck was traveling eastbound on I-24, crossed the median into the westbound lanes near mile marker 93, and hit a semi-tractor trailer.
Investigators said both vehicles caught fire and the two drivers were killed. Crews were on scene for an estimated eight hours or more investigating and reconstructing the collision, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
KSP reported westbound traffic was being diverted through the welcome center and eastbound traffic was down to one lane for . Drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible.
Interstate 24 reopened late Friday evening.
