BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Two Austin Peay football players received OVC Player of the Week honors on Sunday, after the Governors knocked off No. 11 Jacksonville State this weekend 52-33.
Senior quarterback JaVaughn Craig shared Offensive Player of the Week after going 15-for-21 against the Gamecocks with 220 yards passing and a pair of scores through the air. On the ground, Craig also racked up 30 yards and three scores, including a recovered fumble in the end zone, giving him five total touchdowns on the day.
Craig’s performance on Saturday also earned himself CollegeSportsMadness.com National Offensive Player of the Week honors which was also announced on Sunday.
Junior defensive back Kordell Jackson had another stellar outing for the Govs in the secondary Saturday, earning OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks. He picked off two passes, recorded a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry to become the first player in Division I football (FCS or FBS) to intercept multiple passes in multiple games in 2019.
Craig became the first Gov to earn OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors since Jeremiah Oatsvall took home the Nov. 12, 2017 honor. Jackson is not just the first OVC defender to take two honors within three weeks since 2017 (Jacksonville State’s Darius Jackson), he’s the first Gov since Brett Williams in 1980 to earn multiple OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season. It also equaled the same number earned by all Austin Peay defensive players between 2010 and 2016.
Jackson is the first Gov since Brett Williams in 1980 to take home multiple OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season while Craig became the first Gov to seize OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors since Jeremiah Oatsvall who took home the Nov. 12, 2017 honor.
After its bye week, Austin Peay will be back at Fortera Stadium as the Governors host Southeast Missouri Saturday, Oct. 12.
