Montgomery County, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Montgomery County Mayor’s Emerging Leaders have been busy since late August learning how Montgomery County Government operates through their attendance in various County Committee meetings.

The Mayor’s Emerging Leaders Program is for high school students who are interested in learning how local government works through attendance and participation in departmental committee meetings. Students have the option to select their preferred committees and all students are encouraged to attend the budget committee meetings. In 2017 the Montgomery County Commission established a scholarship fund for students who are part of the program. Scholarship awards are based on meeting attendance as well as an essays the students submit at the end of the program.

Committees include: Airport Authority, Animal Care and Control, Emergency Medical Services, Parks and Recreation, Jail and Juvenile, School Liaison, Audit, Fire Protection and E-911. Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett consistently recognizes the students at the budget meetings. He and the County Commissioners encourage the students’ questions and take time to answer them.
