CLARKSVILLE, Tenn, (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville man won big at the recent National Homebrew Competition. A member of the Clarksville Carboys local brew club, Andrew Howell, took home first in his category. The competition was held June 29 in Rhode Island.
Howell competed with 312 other entries from around the country.
Celebrating 40 years, the National Homebrew Competition is the world’s largest contest in amateur beer making.
Howell began brewing in 2013. He became interested in beer making while taking chemistry in college.
His time as a soldier allowed Howell to live in many different locations and learn from many different homebrew groups. Howell joined the Clarksville Carboys after moving to Fort Campbell last year.
“One thing I can say about the homebrewing community is that anyone who loves beer or brewing is always welcome,” said Andrew. “When I found out that I would be moving to Clarksville, I contacted [The Clarksville Carboys], and they invited me to a meeting. Even though I was a stranger, they definitely welcomed me with open arms.”
Howell’s winning brew was an American Pale Ale, named “Big Boi” after his cat.
The Carboys are a local Homebrew Club with over 40 active members that meet to discuss and enjoy craft beer. Their meetings are open anyone interested in the art of home brewing. For more information on the Carboys, visit the club’s website.
