CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University (APSU) hosted their fourth Annual Candlelight Ball Awards Luncheon Tuesday, January 14 in the Franklin Room of F&M Bank on Public Square.

The Candlelight Ball Awards began in 2011 with two individuals honored and recognized each year for their outstanding achievement, contribution or recognition they have brought to Austin Peay.

The recipient of the Candlelight Ball Spirit Award which represents the spirit of Austin Peay was presented by APSU President Tim Hall to Joel Wallace. Wallace is a Clarksville City Councilman representing Ward 9 as well as a practicing attorney.

“Austin Peay means a lot to me and is a really valuable asset to our community. I’ve tried to do everything I can to support Austin Peay and I appreciate them giving me this recognition,” said Wallace.

The Wendell H. Gilbert Award went to retired businessman and banker Ben Kimbrough. Kimbrough has served the local community for many years and worked with and supported a number of organizations at Austin Peay.

“Austin Peay State University means so much to this community and not only to this community but to the surrounding counties in Tennessee. I want to thank the committee that chose me for this honor, it means a great deal to me,” Kimbrough said.

Retired Army Brigadier General and former APSU Vice President for Development and University Relations, Wendell H. Gilbert, founded the Candlelight Ball 30 years ago as a way to raise funds for deserving students who needed academic financial support.

The 30th Anniversary of the Candlelight Ball is scheduled for Saturday, March 15 at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
