CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Sango Elementary students were delighted with a fun filled day of science May 9 during a visit to Austin Peay’s College of STEM. Nearly 140 first-graders visited campus for a morning of scientific demonstrations.
Dr. Karen Meisch, interim dean of Austin Peay’s College of STEM, and her team prepared four different classrooms for the students, each exploring varying themes of science. APSU physics students demonstrated magnetic fields, heating hydrogen-filled balloons, and friction and force. Students were even able to brew slime with Dr. Lisa Sullivan, chair of the chemistry department at Austin Peay.
Through it all APSU professors and students discussed the scientific method and encouraged the students to think deeper. Sango Elementary students were able to get hands-on. They tested movement with wood blocks, tested conclusions, and made observations.
The first-grade students toured the galaxy with Dr. Spencer Buckner, a professor in the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy.
The culminating event for the young scientists was ice cream. They used liquid nitrogen to shock freeze the concoction.
“We’re going to make ice cream like scientists make ice cream,” Sullivan said.
