Elkton, KY. – Officials in Elkton, Kentucky have made the decision to raise the profile of the city of about 2,000 residents in the heart of Todd County through the use of social media.
According to Laura Brock, City Clerk and Treasurer, Elkton has had a website since she came to work there 16 years ago but the focus of the site was mostly on city business. Brock said over the past few years they have moved more into the aspect of tourism.
“We know that people are searching the internet looking for places to visit and places to shop. So we have moved a little bit more toward the tourism side which kind of leads into social media,” Brock said.
Brock added that they have a Facebook account and twitter account that they use to post upcoming events and they also share sales and other activities with their local businesses so people will know what’s going on in the city.
Brock also talked about how sometimes a small town can get lost in the shuffle and social media helps get the word out that the city is here. “We think we’re a nice, small unique town where people can come and visit and shop,” said Brock.
When it comes to shopping Brock said that many people may not be aware they the city has a number of mom and pop and locally owned businesses. New shops have opened up on the city square downtown and I think Elkton has a small town feel that everyone is trying to find again.
