HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WKRN) – A Hopkinsville woman and her boyfriend are suspected of causing “serious physical injuries” to a four-month-old baby.
WKRN News 2 says Kayla Newton, the 22-year-old mother of the victim was arrested earlier this month along with her 20-year-old boyfriend, David Rang.
In an arrest warrant obtained by News 2, Hopkinsville police said Newton “placed her child in a dangerous living situation causing her serious physical injuries,” possibly dating back to February.
According to the paperwork, the four-month-old daughter “was subjected to deplorable living conditions including a massive flea infestation.”
The victim was taken to a hospital in Hopkinsville for “a respiratory issue,” but she was treated and released.
Hours later, “the child was brought back to the hospital with seizure-like symptoms.”
Hospital staff noted the child had injuries to her “lip, ears and various scratches.”
The child was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where doctors said the girl had internal injuries and suffered “brain and eye hemorrhaging, a lacerated liver and fractures to her arms, ribs and legs.”
Rang told detectives “he may not have known his own strength when handling the child,” police said.
Rang is charged with first-degree assault. Newton is charged with first-degree criminal abuse.
Both suspects are being held in the Christian County jail.
