Here’s a look at some of the latest recalls and product safety announcements.
Cuisinart recalls 8M food processors; broken blades reported
Cuisinart is voluntarily recalling about 8 million food processors after dozens of consumers reported finding pieces of broken blades in their food.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been 30 reports of mouth lacerations or tooth injuries from the broken blades. Cuisinart’s parent company, Conair, announced the recall with the CPSC Tuesday.
The recalled processors were sold in the United States and Canada from July 1996 to Dec. 2015. Only processors with four rivets in the blades are included in the recall.
Affected consumers can receive a new blade for free from Cuisinart.
Conair, a privately held company, is headquartered in East Windsor, New Jersey, and has a sales and marketing office in Stamford, Connecticut.
Gov’t: Takata air bag recalls to cover 42M cars when done
The U.S. government says automakers will end up recalling 42 million vehicles with potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Takata Corp.
The National Highway Safety Administration released a schedule for further recalls on Friday. It’s another step toward recalling about 69 million inflators that can potentially explode with too much force and spew shrapnel into people. Some cars will have both the driver side and passenger side air bags replaced.
Recalls are being phased in through the end of 2019.
Eleven people have been killed by Takata inflators in the U.S. and as many as 16 worldwide. The government says 180 people have been hurt in the U.S. alone.
Nineteen automakers are now affected by the recalls. So far only 12.5 million inflators have been replaced.
TreeHouse Foods recalls some products citing salmonella risk
Packaged foods maker TreeHouse Foods Inc on Sunday recalled certain macaroni and cheese cup products containing cheddar cheese seasoning, saying they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The company said no illnesses had been reported and that the products had been distributed nationwide through retail stores.
Products being recalled are Big Win Original Macaroni & Cheese Dinner, Cheese Club Express Mac Macaroni & Cheese Dinner and Great Value Macaroni & Cheese Original Cups, the company said.
TreeHouse said the recall was issued because of a notification from its supplier that the milk powder used in the seasoning of the products had the potential for salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is a bacteria that typically infects the intestinal tract and can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1.2 million illnesses and about 450 deaths occur because of non-typhoidal salmonella annually in the United States.
