MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – Ten vehicles were involved in two crashes Tuesday morning on I-24.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, the first crash involved three vehicles on I-24 eastbound near mile marker 10. It was reported at 8:23 a.m.
A THP report says all three vehicles were traveling in the eastbound lane when a deer crossed the path of Buick Enclave driven by 74-year-old Jimmy Calvert of Cadiz, Ky.
When Calvert began to slow down to avoid the deer, the second vehicle, driven by 74-year-old Kenneth Stroker of Columbia, MO, rear-ended Calvert.
The third vehicle, driven by 74-year-old Gene J. Juelich of Minnesota, was unable to stop in time and rear-ended vehicle #2.
Stroker was transported to was transported to Skyline Medical Center. No one else was injured.
The second crash occurred shortly after the first and involved seven vehicles at exit 8.
I-24 eastbound was shut down for a little over two hours and traffic was at a standstill. As of 11 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
A third crash was also reported, but it did not impede the flow of traffic.
Clarksville police assisted with the crash that occurred at Exit 8. A report says a 2005 Saturn Ion driven by 20-year-old Renisha J. Worthy of Clarksville caused a chain reaction crash while the vehicles were stuck in stop-and-go traffic.
According to the police report, Worthy looked away to take a bite of her food. When she looked back at the roadway, vehicles #2-6 in front of her had stopped and she did not have time to react before rear-ending vehicle #2, a large truck.
This caused a chain reaction that included a pickup truck hauling a trailer, which jacknifed. As the trailer lost stability, it struck the trailer of vehicle #7.
No one was injured. Worthy was cited for following too closely.
