CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off its first road victory, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team returns home to begin a regular-season ending four-match homestand. The Lady Govs host Southeast Missouri in a 7 p.m., Friday, Ohio Valley Conference contest before welcoming UT Martin in a 1 p.m., Saturday contest.
During its recently completed five-match road trip, Austin Peay (7-21, 1-11 OVC) saw several of its younger players step into the limelight.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Ferguson led Austin Peay in kills (48, 2.40 per set) and blocks (19, 0.95 per set) during the excursion. Freshman Logan Carger also stepped up and was second in both kills (44, 2.10 per set) and blocks (15, 0.71 per set).
A little further back in the statistics, freshman Cecily Gable finished the road trip fourth in kills (34, 2.43 per set) while redshirt sophomore Peyton Walker was fifth in kills (28, 1.40 per set).
“Seeing the younger players step up and show their potential has been really encouraging,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “We’ve known they had the ability to play, we were waiting for them to show it on the court. We’re hopeful they can continue their progress and finish the season on a strong note.”
Austin Peay will recognize the three seniors on this season’s squad during pre-match ceremonies, Saturday. April Adams, Aubrey Marsellis and Samantha Strother each begin their final homestand in a Lady Govs uniform.
“Our seniors have been a big part of this program and we’re looking forward to recognizing them this weekend,” said Mott. “It’s a big homestand for them as well and an opportunity for each of them to end their careers in the best way possible.”
