HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The National Weather Service confirmed that on Saturday, Feb. 24 at approximately 8:44 p.m. an EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 135 miles per hour touched down just west of Old Clarksville Pike near Fort Campbell Boulevard in Hopkinsville.
It moved eastward toward Calvin Drive and the Pennyrile Parkway/Pembroke Road interchange before heading into Christian County and ending around 8:51 p.m.
Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks officially declared a state of emergency for the city Monday.
The tornado hit Eagle Crossing Apartments at the intersection of Pennyrile Pkwy and Pembroke Rd., displacing 148 people in 72 units, according to the Hopkinsville Fire Department. Six people were treated at the scene and released, three people were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
At least four buildings sustained major roof damage.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established set up for Eagle Crossing residents. Clothes can be donated to the Hopkinsville Salvation Army.
Volunteers are also needed. Contact Hopkinsville Public Works at (270) 890-0600 to assist in debris removal.
Emergency shelter for displaced residents was initially set-up at the Thomas Street Recreation Department for use Saturday and Sunday night. Today, the American Red Cross is moving any displaced residents to Saint Johns United Methodist Church.
