CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville and surrounding areas woke up to sleet and freezing rain with snow on top of that Monday morning, making travel on the roadways very dangerous. All of that sleet and freezing rain under the snow is adding to the problem on the streets and roads.

The Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center opened at midnight Sunday night and one of those on duty, Officer Steve Warren with the Clarksville Police Department, talked about the road conditions.

“The problem is this all started around midnight with mainly sleet and freezing rain a couple of hours before the snow showed up so we’re going to have a layer of ice under the snow which will complicate things quite a bit,” Warren said.

Warren and Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Jerry Buchanan are urging people not to get out on the roads because of the very slippery conditions unless you absolutely have to.

The winter storm warning from the National Weather Service continues through midnight Monday night with a total accumulation of 3-10 inches of snow expected. That of course is along with the sleet, freezing rain and icy conditions already on the roads.

Temperatures will likely remain below freezing through Saturday.

Let faucets drip overnight to prevent pipes from freezing and bring pets inside.
