CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The search continues for a man who disappeared Friday night in the Red River after an altercation with another man in a parking lot on North Riverside Drive.

According to witnesses, security guards had broken up a fight between two men. One of the men, a 24-year-old, reportedly fought with the security guards and somehow entered the fast-moving water of the Red River. Authorities aren’t sure whether the man jumped into the river or fell.

Clarksville police spokesman Jim Knoll says efforts to find the man are ongoing. His name wasn’t immediately released. WKRN reports the missing man was identified by the Clarksville Fire Department as a soldier in the U.S. Army.

Rescue personnel with Clarksville Fire Rescue, Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services, and Emergency Management Agency (EMA), continued their search over the weekend but did not find any sign of the missing man.

EMA Director Jerry Buchanan said the search had been called off as of Monday afternoon but would resume Tuesday morning. Authorities in Stewart County have also been notified.

The Coast Guard was notified of the incident.

Heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey caused the river to rise.
