CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Clarksville City Council and Montgomery County Commission will host a roundtable discussion Monday, Aug. 24 to discuss the proposed civic plaza in downtown Clarksville.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the William O. Beach Civic Hall within Veterans Plaza. The public is invited to attend.
Council members and commissioners will discuss the Bank of America property on Legion Street, whose purchase has been a topic of heated debate over several months.
Many commissioners have said they are in favor of a civic plaza with some commissioners sharing concern that they would like to see a plan in place before the property is purchased.
The estimated price to purchase the property, for demolition, site, and design work as well as construction is $3.5 million.
The council and commission have considered partnering to purchase the property, but so far the groups have not reached a consensus.
City Mayor Kim McMillan released a statement Monday afternoon explaining that she will be absent from the meeting due to a previously scheduled medical procedure.
“Just as a majority of the City Council was not able to attend the recent Special Session to hear and discuss the economic findings of Mr. Gross because of previously scheduled events and engagements, the same is true for me with this specially set meeting,” McMillan said.
“I do not want anyone to think that my not being able to attend means that I am not amenable to discussing and/or attempting to work with anyone on issues surrounding this topic.”
