CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Larry Richardson’s passion for nature comes alive in his new series of paintings celebrating the Cumberland River.

Richardson’s work, The Cumberland River – An American Legacy, will be on display at the Customs House Museum May through July, with a special reception May 12.

Richardson grew up in Kentucky with a yearning for the outdoors. He and his friends would spend their time roaming the fields and streams near his home.

As he grew up, this affinity for nature stayed with Richardson. His love of ponds, creeks, marshes, and rivers inspired his latest project.

“I hope to instill an appreciation of the aquatic environment and local history of these life-giving waters through my art shows and presentations,” Richardson said.

As far as style is concerned, Richardson says he likes realism, not photographic, but leans more toward an impressionistic style, leaving a loose edge or the gesture of a shadow. This technique invites the viewer to “make the final stroke.”

“I paint for my own enjoyment, and if others like what’s on the canvas, then it’s even more enjoyable for me,” he said. “My easel always displays a work in progress. When I travel, a camera and sketchbook go along to expand reference materials for future paintings.”

In addition to his painting prowess, Richardson also holds an advanced degree in biology. He has worked in parks and wildlife, art publishing, and even the U.S. Senate.

He began to consider art seriously when working with noted wildlife painter Ralph McDonald, helping him develop a new business in the 1970s. Since then, he has been involved in both art publishing and sales throughout his career.

Richardson has written three books to date and is currently working on a fourth.

He now enjoys a quiet life on the water between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley with his black Labrador retriever.
