Former Chamber President, Jack Mayer dies

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Former Chamber President and owner of local radio station WDXN, Jack Mayer, died Tuesday June 18 in Marietta, GA.

According to his obituary posted by Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, Mayer was born in New York, NY on November 25, 1923. After graduation from high school, he served honorably in the Army Air Force during World War II. After his service to his country, he attended the City College of New York where he studied broadcasting.

Jack’s career in broadcasting took him to many towns around the southeastern U.S, beginning in Albany, GA where he was the announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League team. He had a long career in radio and television management & sales, which eventually led him to Clarksville, TN where he became owner/operator of WDXN radio.

Jack was a leader in the community, serving as president of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, Clarksville Kiwanis Club, Clarksville Community Concerts and the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters. Jack made friends easily, and he will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and integrity.  He loved sports and was an enthusiastic Braves fan. He had a strong faith and a deep love for God.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Kay Mayer, and brother Joseph Mayer. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Mayer Adams and her husband Gary of Marietta, grandchildren, Chip and Molly Adams, nephew, Arthur Mayer and niece, Dianne Durkee.

A memorial service will be held at Parc at Piedmont, 999 Hood Road, Marietta, GA 30068 on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., friends are welcome. A private memorial service will be held at his place of residence. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Clarksville, TN at a later date.
