Fallen soldier to be honored at Fort Campbell

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Fort Campbell will hold a remembrance ceremony to honor Staff Sgt. Sonny C. Zimmerman of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

The ceremony will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. at McAuliffe Hall.

Zimmerman, 25, of Waynesfield, Ohio was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as an infantry squad leader. He joined the Army in June 2005.

He was killed July 15 while on a mounted patrol in Paktiya Province, eastern Afghanistan when his vehicle was struck by a rocket propelled grenade.

Zimmerman’s awards include one Purple Heart, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, three Afghanistan Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Ribbons, NATO Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Air Assault Badge.

Zimmerman is survived by his wife, Morgan C. Zimmerman of Lima, Ohio; his step-daughter, Riley A. McVicker, of Lima, Ohio; and his parents, Chris L. Zimmerman of Waynesfield, Ohio, and Michelle Fischbach of Jennings, Ohio.
