Anytime I hear a recommendation of a pizza place here in town, I am eager to check it out. The idea of pizza in less than 5 minutes? They had my attention. Located behind the Verizon store on Wilma Rudolph, next to Panera and Moe’s, Pie Five Pizza Co. was next on my list of places to explore.

The morning of my planned lunch I happened to chat with another person who had already been to Pie Five. Recently diagnosed with both gluten and dairy sensitivity, he appreciated the fact that he could order a gluten-free pizza crust at Pie Five and have it made with just the toppings he could eat. With more and more people recognizing gluten causes them health problems, Pie Five has just given these individuals a great option for eating out. (There is a $2.00 additional charge for the gluten-free crust.)

Pie Five makes the ordering process easy. Their signature pies list the toppings along with crust suggestion. Five Star, Farmer’s Market, BBQ Chicken, Tuscan Chicken, Athenian, and High Five are several of the signature choices. Substitutions and additions are welcome, and the price ($6.99) is the same, no matter what you add or subtract. Want to come up with your own amazing combination? They welcome it. They’re claim is that there are over 5,000,000 combinations possible!

I went with the Five Star– Classic Pan crust with Tuscan marinara, pork sausage, pepperoni, beef, green and black olives, red and green peppers, red onions, and cheddar. (I added sun-dried tomatoes, too). We ordered Athenian on the Artisan Thin crust. It comes loaded with olive oil, feta, grilled chicken, minced garlic, banana peppers, red onions, fresh basil, Kalamata olives, and drizzled with a sun-dried tomato purée. We also ordered the Chicken Carbonara (Alfredo sauce, parmesan, grilled chicken, mushrooms, crushed red pepper, and bacon on the Artisan Thin crust).

The pizzas really were done within five minutes of ordering. There was plenty of seating to choose from, and we were able to dig into the pies moments after they came out of the conveyor oven.

Each pizza had a unique flavor combination. Each was delicious. I really liked the pan crust with the Five Star. The weight of the ingredients welcomed the strength of the thicker crust and the robust tomato sauce held up well on that crust. The Athenian was a hit, as every ingredient is a favorite. The Carbonara came in third, though I always welcome bacon on a pizza.

If you are looking for a salad, they also offer those. Dessert? Yep, three kinds of pie shaped brownie-cookie pans of deliciousness.

The only distasteful part of the experience came when I asked for a larger cup for water. The young employee said if I wanted a bigger cup, I would have to pay the full price for a drink. She then informed me that if I wanted more water, I could just go back and get a refill. I have to admit I didn’t appreciate her less than accommodating attitude.

Overall, though, we were pleased with Pie Five. We will be going back. After all, there are a whole lot of combinations for us to try!
