Having heard mixed reviews on New York Pizza Depot, I was eager to give it a try. Located on the corner of Ringgold Road and Fort Campbell Blvd., the simple red building stands out and is easily accessible.

My co-workers and I trooped into the restaurant, none of us having been before. As the day outside was bright and sunny, the interior of the restaurant seemed particularly dark. Once our eyes adjusted, we headed across the expansive room to the counter to check out the menu. We decided to order both a Specialty pizza and a calzone, especially after the helpful man behind the counter explained to us that they used only the finest ricotta cheese in their calzones. With pizza choices like New York’s Finest (pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon- $22.99), Everything (pepperoni, sausage, meatball, onion, green pepper, mushroom, and black olive- $22.99), and American Pie (meatball, bacon, cheddar, mozzarella-$17.99), we debated a bit before deciding to go with the American Pie, along with a spinach, onion, black olive and garlic Calzone ($8.99 +.95 per add-in).

Prepared to wait 20-25 minutes due to the bake time required in a brick oven (“Not on a conveyor belt!” we were informed proudly), we chose a table and chatted. Around us, there were quite a few soldiers enjoying a few slices (the weekday special- 11:00-3:00- is 2 slices and a drink for $5.95) as well as some who were getting in a quick game of pool.

The wait time melted away when the American Pie appeared on our table. Enormous slices of pizza, intended to be folded and enjoyed, were quickly transferred to our paper plates. Piping hot, we did have to pace ourselves, though it was difficult as the pizza was really tasty. We had just finished our first slices when the calzone arrived. Beautifully golden and enormous, it was oozing with ricotta and mozzarella cheese, along with the veggies, and whole cloves of garlic. There were sides of chunky red sauce into which we could dip the delicious calzone. (We were surprised that the sauce was cold, agreeing that we would have preferred it to be warm.)

Some restaurants invest a lot of time and thought into the décor of their eatery. New York Pizza Depot is not one of those places. One would definitely refer to the décor as sparse. But where they have not skimped was on perfecting a really delicious slice of pizza. And really, isn’t that what a good pizza place is supposed to do?
