Restaurant review by Pamela Holz, Realtor with Reliant Realty

Tucked into the strip mall by Sango Walmart is a new barbeque place that is worth a visit. Dickey’s Barbeque Pit has free pickles and free ice cream, as well as “Kids Eat Free Sundays.” But the main reason to check out Dickey’s is because of the amazing meat selections that are offered. A person can enjoy pulled pork, beef brisket, turkey breast, chicken breast, BBQ honey ham, spicy cheddar sausage, and Polish sausage. Because the meats are smoked on-site daily, the place smells amazing. (The drawback to the meats being smoked on-site daily is that some days they run out!)

I ordered the pulled pork and the spicy cheddar sausage, along with the baked potato casserole and the fried okra. The meal also came with a roll, several pickles, and fresh onions. The baked potato casserole was not what I imagined it would be, but was okay. It tasted like mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese and chives on top. I had to wait a few minutes for my fried okra, which I actually appreciated… because they made it fresh when I ordered it. That is what they do for each order of a fried item, be it their Onion Tanglers, the okra, or their Waffle Iron Fries. (That seems a brilliant move—fried food tastes best when freshest!)

Dickey’s offers three types of barbeque sauce: original, sweet, and spicy. I sampled all three, and to my surprise, I preferred the sweet sauce. It had a wonderfully rich maple flavor to it, which paired very nicely with the fatty goodness of the smoky pulled pork. The spicy cheddar sausage needs no accompaniment, except maybe a napkin to wipe your fingers… unless you decide to lick them. Yep, it is pretty good stuff!

Not that I needed more to eat, but when the opportunity presented itself to try their pecan pie, I couldn’t resist having a bite (or three!). I am a bit of a “Crust Connoisseur”– read that as “I both bake and eat pie crusts, enjoying the flaky, buttery morsels of deliciousness that a good crust offers”– but I left most of the crust on the plate. The pecan filling was quite good—not too sweet, as far as pecan pies go, and plenty of crunchy pecans to balance out the gooeyness.

In addition to getting a great sit down meal, Dickey’s offers Family Packs and Catering. The staff is helpful, pleasant and cheerful. The restaurant has a welcome feel, and with the wood planks and corrugated metal on the walls, along with the wagon wheel light fixtures, it is reminiscent of the old West. This is Texas-BBQ, and Dickey’s serves it up just right.
