NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander says his chief of staff has been placed on leave after learning the staffer’s home was being searched as part of a child pornography investigation.

In a news release Tuesday, the Tennessee Republican said he had just been informed by the Senate legal counsel’s office that law enforcement agents were conducting a search of Ryan Loskarn’s home. Loskarn is the chief of staff in Alexander’s Washington, D.C., office.

According to WKRN, agents with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service raided Loskarn’s Washington, D.C. home and found hundreds of videos of minors engaged in sexual acts on an external hard drive.

A complaint filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. Thursday also claims Loskarn bought and received a number of DVDs showing child pornography.

He is also accused of downloading several files, containing pornographic images of children.

Alexander says he was “stunned, surprised and disappointed” by the news.

He says that he immediately placed Loskarn on administrative leave without pay and that his office is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Alexander is a former Tennessee governor and has also served as the U.S. Secretary of Education. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002.

WKRN reports that late Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Alexander announced that he has named David Clearly as his new chief of staff.

“David has worked with me for eight years and fortunately is well-prepared to step into this position,” Alexander said in a release.

Cleary severed as Alexander’s legislative director since 2011 and as Republican staff director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee since 2012. He has been working with Alexander since 2006.
