FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) headquarters received notice Jan. 10 of its spring 2018 deployment to Afghanistan and is ready for its next “Rendezvous with Destiny.”
“The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) remains, as it did 75 years ago when it was forged during the maelstrom of World War II, ready to answer the call to fight and win our nation’s wars,” said Maj. Gen. Andrew P. Poppas, 101st Airborne commander. “This will be the division headquarters’ fourth deployment to Afghanistan in the last decade. We know the terrain, we know our partners and we know our mission.”
The 101st headquarters will replace 3rd Infantry Division headquarters as part of a regular rotation of forces to support Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
The Department of the Army announced the division headquarters’ deployment earlier today.
One of 18 U.S. Army divisions and the world’s only air assault division, the 101st ABN DIV (AASLT) exists to fight and win our nation’s wars. Its mission is to provide unmatched expeditionary land forces via rotary-wing aircraft to seize and hold key terrain after forcibly entering a hostile area, or to conduct other military operations anywhere in the world in support of unified combatant commanders.
