STEWART COUNTY, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a murder related to a home invasion and fire on Rorie Hollow Road in Indian Mound Sunday, September 23.
Stewart County Sheriff Frankie Gray said an elderly couple came home from church and interrupted a burglary in progress. The intruder attacked and bound the couple before setting the house on fire and fleeing the scene.
Gray said the husband was able to escape and tried to get help. Individuals at the scene were able to pull the woman from the home, but she was pronounced dead.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) identified the woman as 63-year-old Brenda Smith. An autopsy will be performed Monday.
Smith’s husband was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
Sheriff Gray said the suspect has not been identified, but authorities are looking for a white male with a medium build and thinning brown hair who is about 5’6 to 5’8.
The suspect fled the scene in a black 2005 Chrysler 300 with Tennessee tag 477-MBC.

TBI Agents were request by 23rd District Attorney General Ray Crouch to join the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
